چکیده

The EMBO Journal is run by the European Molecular Biology Organization, EMBO: an organization run by scientists, for scientists. EMBO aims to promote excellence in science, transparency, efficiency and inclusiveness. These are also cornerstones of The EMBO Journal. In this light, and in response to discussions in the community, we are introducing three major changes in The EMBO Journal from 1 January 2009:

Bypass specialists operate together

New experiments show that different combinations of translesion DNA polymerases act to bypass lesions in mammalian cells, depending on the type of DNA damage. Bypass of most lesions tested was dependent on REV3L (pol zeta) and at least one additional DNA polymerase. The data fit a model whereby DNA polymerases work sequentially to bypass adducts in DNA.

Circadian clocks can take a few transcriptional knocks

A thought-provoking study in this issue of The EMBO Journal shows that the circadian clock in mouse fibroblasts is surprisingly insensitive to the inhibition of total cellular mRNA production. The authors go on to show intriguing parallels between compensation of period to changes in temperature and global transcription rate.
